SPC Coach Showcase: Private Family Tennis Coaches
Private Family Tennis Coaches need to offer far more than technical expertise. Working closely with an individual player and their family requires trust, discretion, adaptability, consistency and an understanding of the person behind the player.
This week, we are featuring five SPC coaches who identified most closely with the Private Coach for family category.
Meet Our Private Family Tennis Coaches
Successful Private Family Tennis Coaches need to adapt their coaching around the individual. That can mean understanding a young player’s ambitions, managing tournament schedules, building confidence, communicating closely with parents or simply creating a positive environment in which somebody can enjoy their tennis and progress.
The five coaches featured this week bring very different backgrounds, but all understand the importance of relationships, individual development and tailoring their approach to the player in front of them.
Michael Billson

Michael Billson brings more than ten years of experience in junior tennis development, including work with leading national and international juniors.
His philosophy centres on helping players maximise their potential while developing the skills, habits and mindset needed to perform effectively in competition. His own extensive travel and commitment to physical health and performance have also shaped his approach as a coach.
Michael has achieved strong results working privately with talented junior players and believes that successful development starts with the attitude and commitment of the athlete. His approach is focused, performance-led and built around giving motivated players the tools to progress.
For a family looking for an experienced coach who understands both junior development and the demands of competitive tennis, Michael brings a combination of structure, experience and clear expectations.

Christopher Rootare

Christopher Rootare combines high-level tennis coaching with international experience and an understanding of the particular demands involved in working within a private family environment.
His approach is highly personalised. He takes time to understand the player’s ambitions, personality and lifestyle before building the coaching process around them.
Having worked with VIP and private clients in luxury environments, Christopher recognises that a private coach needs to provide much more than technical instruction. Discretion, adaptability, professionalism, reliability and consistency all form an important part of the role.
He describes himself as ambitious, observant and disciplined while remaining approachable and positive with the people he coaches. His aim is to become a trusted professional within the family environment, contributing not only to tennis development but also to the player’s confidence and character.

Haydn Lewis

Haydn Lewis brings the perspective of a former ATP touring professional and Davis Cup player, but his coaching philosophy extends well beyond technical development.
His focus is on developing the whole person and helping players build genuine confidence and self-belief both on and off the court.
Haydn uses a patient, awareness-based coaching style. Rather than simply dictating instructions, he encourages players to explore, recognise patterns, self-correct and develop greater ownership of their game.
He places particular importance on emotional control, mental clarity and creating an environment where players feel comfortable taking risks and learning at their own pace.
For a family, that combination of elite playing experience and patient mentorship can be particularly valuable. Haydn’s goal is not simply to improve performance, but to help players develop resilience, character and a genuine love for the process of improving.

Nevena Sokovic

Nevena Sokovic combines professional tennis experience with a personalised and caring approach to coaching. Having played at a high level and represented Serbia internationally, she understands both the technical and competitive demands of the sport.
As a private coach, Nevena focuses on understanding each player as an individual and creating a training environment in which they can improve, build confidence and continue enjoying their tennis.
She describes herself as patient, positive, disciplined and highly attentive to detail. Just as importantly, she believes that trust and a strong relationship with the player are essential when working closely with a family.
Her approach looks beyond results alone. Nevena aims to help young athletes become more confident, focused, independent and resilient, developing qualities that support them both on and off the tennis court.

Joseph Kojo Doe-Adjani

Joseph Kojo Doe-Adjani brings more than three decades of coaching experience and a tennis journey that began in Ghana in the 1980s. He started coaching while still at school and has since worked with players across a wide variety of ages and levels.
His coaching experience has included the University of Ghana tennis team, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the Ghana Armed Forces tennis team and players who have progressed to the Ghana National Team.
Joseph holds ITF Level 1 and Level 2 coaching qualifications and was selected to coach Ghana’s National Junior Tennis Team from 2024.
Alongside his technical experience, Joseph places great value on relationships. He describes himself as tolerant, easy-going and humorous and believes his ability to relate well to people both on and off the court has been an important part of his coaching career.
That combination of experience, patience and interpersonal skills gives Joseph a strong foundation for working closely with individual players and families.
