Professionalism in The Tennis Industry | Raising Standards in Coaching Jobs

Professionalism in the Tennis Industry

Professionalism in tennis coach recruitment is one of the most important issues facing the global racket sports industry today. As the owner of SportsProsConnect, a worldwide tennis coach jobs platform, I see firsthand how standards of communication and behaviour can directly impact careers and club environments.

Over the past six years, we have helped more than 600 tennis, padel and fitness coaches secure positions around the world. Many of those coaches have found multiple roles through our platform, resulting in more than 800 placements.

But recruitment is not just about filling jobs. It is about raising standards.

My personal mission has always been to help professionalise the racket sports industry. That starts with professionalism in tennis coach recruitment.

Why Professionalism in Tennis Coach Recruitment Still Needs Work

In 2024, we hosted an online conference for tennis coaches centred around our four core values:

▪️ Professionalism
▪️ Connection
▪️ Community
▪️ Commitment

Professionalism is not about playing professionally. It is about communication, responsibility and respect.

While writing this blog, I received an email from a coach I had never spoken to before. The email included hitting videos and a coaching certificate. There was no introduction. No explanation. No effort to present himself.

This is not uncommon.

Why would a recruiter, club or academy invest time reviewing information when no effort has been made to introduce oneself properly?

At the same time, professionalism in tennis coach recruitment must work both ways.

Recruiters often fail to respond to applications. Ghosting happens frequently. Some clubs receive hundreds of speculative emails and simply ignore them.

The reality is that both coaches and recruiters must improve standards if we want the industry to evolve.

What Recruiters Should Look For

Professionalism in tennis coach recruitment begins with due diligence and clear communication.

Recruiters should:

▪️ Follow up references and testimonials
▪️ Expect professional and timely responses
▪️ Require a proper introduction letter or cover letter
▪️ Ensure candidates present themselves professionally in interviews
▪️ Review job descriptions and salary structures carefully
▪️ Assess job history and commitment levels
▪️ Consider cultural fit within the organisation

A trial period often reveals far more than an interview alone.

Recruitment is not just about technical ability. It is about trust, reliability and long-term fit.

What Coaches Should Expect and Deliver

Professionalism in tennis coach recruitment is equally important for coaches applying for roles.

Coaches should:

▪️ Ensure the job role is clearly explained
▪️ Ask detailed and intelligent questions
▪️ Expect transparent communication throughout
▪️ Research the club or academy thoroughly
▪️ Be cautious of roles that seem unrealistic
▪️ Speak with existing employees if possible
▪️ Understand why the position is available

At the same time, coaches must present themselves properly. A thoughtful introduction, tailored application and professional follow-up go a long way.

Common sense is important. Consistency is even more important.

Raising Standards Across the Industry

One recruiter who consistently demonstrates professionalism in tennis coach recruitment is Martijn Belgraver, General Manager of the Rafa Nadal Academy in Kuwait. We have supported their recruitment process since launch.

As Martijn says:

“Recruitment never sleeps, nor does SportsProsConnect.”

That mindset matters.

Since launching SPC Football, I have observed similar issues in other sports. In some cases, standards appear even lower than in racket sports.

Step by step, we aim to address these issues.

Professionalism in tennis coach recruitment is not optional. It is essential if we want the industry to mature and thrive.

If coaches and recruiters both commit to higher standards, the entire ecosystem improves.

Thanks for reading, and feel free to share your thoughts. Next week we return to our Coach Spotlight series.
