Aljosa Nipic - Tennis Coach

Agder
Norway

I am Aljoša Nipič, a dedicated tennis coach with 18 years of experience. I was a national champion in Slovenia at U12, U14, and U16 levels, and I achieved a highest ranking of 64 in Tennis Europe and 120 in ITF.

I played NCAA Division 1 for the University of Denver and hold a degree in Sport Science from Ljubljana University. I’ve coached champions across Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, and Greece, and currently serve as Head Coach at Kristiansand Tennisklubb in Norway. I am eager for new challenges in my coaching career.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in sport science with a focus on tennis
  • USPTR – Professional 1
  • RPT – Head Professional
  • Reality Therapy certified counselor

I began my tennis journey at the age of 6, hitting balls against a wall, and by 8, I joined my first organised practice at a local tennis club. My early passion and dedication paid off, and I quickly found success in local and national tournaments. I became a national champion in several categories, including U12, U14, and U16.

At 16, I signed a contract with a sports manager, which unfortunately turned out to be a significant mistake. The person I trusted to guide my career was not who they seemed, and after six months under their management, my game deteriorated to the point where I struggled to keep the ball in play. Despite working tirelessly for the next four years, sacrificing my free time, friendships, and even my education, the pressure and manipulation from this manager took a heavy toll. He went as far as threatening my mother and me, claiming that our apartment was at risk if I didn’t perform as expected.

By the time I was 20, I managed to break free from the contract and decided to try my hand at college tennis. However, the experience was also challenging, as I struggled to meet the expectations of my coach and the team. The pressure became overwhelming, and I ultimately stepped away from tennis for a year.

After taking some time to reflect, I returned to the sport on my terms, much like the boy who started hitting against the wall at 6. I enrolled in a sports faculty, choosing tennis as my focus, and attended every coaching conference I could, often borrowing money from clients to do so. Through hard work and a renewed perspective, I slowly built a clear understanding of tennis and coaching.

Coaching, for me, is more than a profession—it’s a way to heal and rediscover my love for the game. I approach every opportunity with the same passion and determination that drove me as a young player, and I am committed to helping others achieve their full potential, both on and off the court.

I am currently employed as the Head Coach at Kristiansand Tennisklubb, where I have worked for the past five years. During this time, I have faced the challenge of operating in a club environment that initially lacked competitive ambition. However, despite the suboptimal conditions, I have successfully built a strong competitive program that has surpassed all expectations.

For the first time in the club’s history, Kristiansand Tennisklubb had four players qualify for the prestigious year-end Masters tournament, which features the top eight players in the country. These players include:

  • Tomas Lund (U13)
  • Alexander Hogga (U15)
  • Jorgen and William Wirak (U19)

In addition to developing a competitive program, I have significantly increased participation in the club’s adult recreational courses, beginner courses, as well as red and orange ball programs for younger players. The work has been demanding, but also incredibly rewarding, as the participants have shown great appreciation for the effort and dedication I’ve invested.

With the current generation of players preparing to depart for opportunities like NCAA scholarships, I am now ready for my next challenge. I am excited for new coaching opportunities where I can continue to grow as a coach and make a lasting impact.

Experience

My coaching philosophy and approach are deeply rooted in my extensive experience as a player and the significant influences of the coaches and mentors I’ve had the privilege of working with throughout my career.

One of the most impactful experiences was my time at the Niki Pilic Tennis Academy in Munich, where I spent a transformative year. Niki Pilic’s coaching style left a lasting impression on me. His approach was marked by simplicity and precision—his interventions were timely and minimal, yet profoundly effective. This “less is more” philosophy is something I strive to embody in my own coaching, ensuring that my guidance is clear, focused, and impactful.

Another major influence in my coaching career has been Dr. Ales Filipcic, my mentor at the University. His scientific approach to coaching reshaped my understanding of the craft. Under his guidance, I learned to appreciate the balance between scientific knowledge and intuitive understanding. To me, effective coaching is a blend of evidence-based practices and the ability to read and respond to the unique needs of each player.

These experiences have shaped me into a coach who values both the art and science of coaching, always aiming to foster growth in my athletes through thoughtful, measured, and informed guidance.

I had the pleasure of working closely with Aljosa Nipic at the Ljubljana Tennis Center, where he served in multiple capacities including coach, hitting partner, conditioning trainer, and traveling coach. His dedication to the development of our players was evident in the remarkable results we achieved together. Under his guidance, our academy produced three national champions: Nik Jurjevcic, the Slovenian champion under 16; Lazar Milicevic, the Serbian champion under 16; and Jovan Ilic, the runner-up in the Croatian under 16 category. Aljosa Nipic was also instrumental in the development of Veronika Erjavec, who is now ranked 168 in WTA singles and 120 in doubles. His ability to connect with players, combined with his rigorous approach to training, made him an invaluable member of our team. Aljosa’s expertise extends beyond just the technical aspects of coaching. He brings a unique blend of experience, intuition, and a scientific approach to his work, which greatly contributed to the success of our athletes. I wholeheartedly endorse him as a coach who is not only knowledgeable and skilled but also deeply committed to the growth and success of his players." — Dr. Ales Filipcic, Professor at the Faculty of Sport, University of Ljubljana, and Director at Ljubljana Tennis Center

His tenure has been marked by a remarkable transformation in the club's environment and competitive spirit, despite the challenges of working within conditions that are primarily recreational and not always optimal for high-performance training. Under Aljoša’s leadership, we have seen an unprecedented growth in both membership and participation in our tennis courses, reaching levels that the club has never experienced before. His ability to develop and implement a comprehensive program that caters to all levels—from beginners to adults and young juniors—has been nothing short of extraordinary.
