An LTA Master Performance Coach (Level 5) with over 20 years’ experience successfully coaching dedicated tennis players to achieve improved ratings and to compete at County, National and International level.

Experience

2006 to Present: Lancashire County Cup Captain

  •  For the last 12 years I have been a County Cup captain, working with the U18 and U14 boys’ teams. This involves organizing and running County selection training camps to identify and select players for the team in the different age categories. I am currently the captain for the U14 boys’ team which achieved National finals in both 2016 and 2017, and were also awarded Lancashire team of the year in 2016 and 2017. At the end of each County Cup event I prepare a report summarizing the event and team performance for distribution to the players and parents.

September 2020 – Present: Performance Coach / Advisor at Bowdon LTC

My role currently is to oversee the club programme working closely with the Head Coach to advise better junior pathway at the club and develop the performance area within it. My aim is to guide players to meet county / regional / national standards in all age groups.

  • I am currently coaching players who are Nationally ranked, including a player in the top 30 U16 boys, and a player in the top 30 U14 boys who is on the Regional Pathway Programme.
  • Planning and delivering group coaching sessions to ensure that all players receive the best and most appropriate coaching and development throughout the year, in order for them to progress through the relevant squads
  • Planning and delivering personalised performance coaching to individual squad players, ensuring each one develops as a player and progresses to the best of their ability
  • Providing individual progress reports to parents outlining a player’s progress and outlining short and long term development plans
  • Working with the coaching team to review the progress of individual players and to put plans in place for their continuing development
  • Guiding and mentoring individual coaches and helping them to develop their coaching skills and improve their qualifications as appropriate
  • Overseeing coaching sessions being delivered by other coaches, and using my coaching experience to provide guidance where necessary.

February 2015 to August 2020: Head Performance Coach at The Northern Tennis Club

My role as Head Performance Coach is to oversee the tennis programme, working closely with the Director of Tennis, to support all players attending the LTA Performance Club and also to coach players through to County, Regional and National level. My specific responsibilities include:

  • Coaching players who are Nationally ranked, including a player in the top 30 U16 boys, a player in the top 10 U16 girls with an ITF ranking of 626, and a player in the top 30 U14 boys
  • Planning and delivering group coaching sessions to ensure that all players receive the best and most appropriate coaching and development throughout the year, in order for them to progress through the relevant squads
  • Planning and delivering personalised performance coaching to individual squad players, ensuring each one develops as a player and progresses to the best of their ability
  • Providing individual progress reports to parents outlining a player’s progress and outlining short and long term development plans
  • Working with the coaching team to review the progress of individual players and to put plans in place for their continuing development
  • Guiding and mentoring individual coaches and helping them to develop their coaching skills and improve their qualifications as appropriate
  • Overseeing coaching sessions being delivered by other coaches, providing guidance where necessary
  • Organising an annual Aegon Team Tennis event for all U12-U18 players who are entering into the Premier/County Division
  • Outreach work in schools to promote tennis and to strengthen the Club’s programme. This involves working closely with the Regional Tennis Participation Manager to identify any children with the potential to advance in the tennis programme
  • Organising the Legacy Programme which is an initiative to encourage as many local school children as possible to play tennis, in the run up to the Fuzion 100 Manchester Trophy event, which is an annual event at the Club
  • Coach and captain the Premier men’s team in the North East Cheshire league

January 2011 – February 2015: Head Performance Coach at VA Lancashire Tennis Academy

My role as Head Performance Coach was to oversee the tennis programme, with the Racquets Manager, to support all players attending the LTA Performance Centre and also to coach players of all ages and abilities from mini tennis through to County, Regional and National level. My specific responsibilities included:

  • Mentoring individual coaches and helping them to develop their coaching skills and improve their qualifications as appropriate
  • Planning and organising group coaching sessions to ensure that all players received the best and most appropriate coaching and development throughout the year
  • Overseeing coaching sessions and providing feedback to individual coaches
  • Providing individual performance coaching to squad players, ensuring each player progressed to the best of their ability
  • Providing group coaching sessions for players of all abilities from mini tennis through to competitive level
  • Organising an annual North West Aegon Team Tennis event for all U12-U18 players who were entering into the Premier/County Division
  • Outreach work in schools to promote tennis and to strengthen the Academy programme. This involved working closely with the Community Sports Officer and organising 4-5 week tennis sessions for school children, and then identifying any children with the potential to progress further through the tennis programme
  • Providing individual progress reports to parents/carers outlining a player’s progress to date and plans for further development

September 2004 – December 2010: Performance Coach at Bolton Arena – High Performance Centre

My role as Performance Coach was to oversee the progression and development of all players aged 16-18 who were part of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) scheme. My specific responsibilities included:

  • Planning and delivering performance coaching to squad players, ensuring each individual player developed
  • Providing  individual coaching to Matrix ABC players, planning the sessions to ensure their progress and development through the programme
  • Planning and organising attendance at tournaments throughout the year for U18 players competing in Grade 1-3 events, British National events and International Tennis Federation events
  • Providing progress information to AASE Tutor
  • Organising regular Parent/Carer meetings to provide insight into the High Performance Centre and information on players funding and other matters

January 1997 – August 2004: Head County Coach at Essex County LTA

My role as Head County Coach was to work with the County Performance Officer to plan and organise the structure of all County Performance and County U10-U18 squads held at the County Centre. My specific responsibilities included:

  • Planning and organising each individual player’s progress to ensure that all players received the best and most appropriate coaching and development throughout the year
  • Organising squad sessions for players throughout each term
  • Providing individual performance coaching to all County players from U10-U18 age groups, ensuring individual progress and development to National standard in their age groups
  • Planning and organising Talent ID sessions for specific players within the different age groups
  • Planning and organising attendance at tournaments throughout the year for players competing in Grade 1-3 events, British National events and International Tennis Federation events

January 1994 – December 1996: Tennis Development Officer/Head Coach at Southend Tennis Centre

My role as Tennis Development Officer/Performance Coach was to drive tennis participation in the Borough of Southend and increase the numbers of tennis players at the Centre. My specific responsibilities included:

  • Overseeing the outreach work with primary schools and summer tennis camps. Providing guidance to my colleagues and communicating with schools and parents/carers
  • Organising and delivering all squad sessions within the programme
  • Providing individual coaching to players of all age groups in order for them to progress to County and National level
