Jamie Garbett – Tennis Coach
My name is Jamie, I’m 22 from Christchurch, New Zealand. I\\\’m a JDC qualified coach with more than 7 years experience coaching players who range from beginners to high performing athletes. I have a love of coaching and enjoy seeing the development in both the skills and passion for tennis that comes from the support and encouragement of the right coach.

As a previous elite junior player, I well understand what\\\’s required to reach performance standards; equally I understand the importance of striking the balance between performance and enjoyment. As a coach, I pride myself on my ability to understand what\\\’s important to each individual client and my ability to adapt my approach to cater for a wide range of technical abilities, age and goals. As a result of this, I have developed numerous tennis programmes for all ages and abilities for both groups and individuals.

I have played tennis from a very young age, competing through the age groups at a regional and national level until I left secondary school. For much of my junior years I was ranked in the top three in New Zealand, representing New Zealand at the Australian Junior Nationals in the U12 and U14.

As a 14 year old I won the IMG Discovery Open U16 and was offered a scholarship to attend the IMG Academy for 12 months. I launched my own coaching business during my first year at University as a means of funding my way through my tertiary education; holding numerous contracts with elite Private Clubs, along with one of Auckland’s top Tennis Academies for emerging juniors; where I also led a fundraising campaign to enable one of New Zealand’s most promising juniors to gain experience playing at international tournaments.

My love of sport more broadly has also seen me play representative hockey and rugby.

I recently graduated from the University of Auckland with a Finance degree and am looking to combine my love of tennis and coaching skills with my love of travel.

Experience

September 2023 – Current: Senior Tennis Coach at Prebbleton, Lincoln, and Elmwood Tennis Club

I am currently running the junior programme at various clubs, working with beginners through to advanced level players. I am also running adult cardio and beginner lessons at the club.

January 2019 – Current: Private Coach of three ITF ranked players.

I am the current coach of three top 2000 players in the world. I helped develop them from a top New Zealand junior to a college player and ultimately a internationally ranked tennis player.

January 2022 – February 2023: Coach and Hitting Partner at Sparta Tennis Academy: Auckland, New Zealand

Over the course of my time at Sparta Tennis Academy I worked as a coach and hitting partner to some of the best juniors in New Zealand. This experience involved one-on-one hitting, running weekly squads and taking fitness sessions.

December 2020 – January 2022: Senior Coach at Herne Bay Tennis Club and Parnell Tennis Club.

The first year half of working here I was mainly working with amateur tennis players and older people willing to improve their technique and general basics of tennis, as well as kids.
I was usually more focused on making the practice more interesting for them and as enjoyable as possible.
My second year working here I was actually transitioning to playing with high level juniors, mainly sparring and playing matches with them.

January 2019 – December 2020: Senior Coach at Pompallier Tennis Club, Herne Bay, Auckland New Zealand

Throughout my time at Pompallier, I ran all levels of coaching, with a specific emphasis on adult private and group coaching. I ended up coaching 15 different adults weekly privately as well as doing group coaching.
