SPC Coach Showcase: Travel Coaches and High Performance Tennis Professionals
At SportsProsConnect, we are always looking for new ways to help our members promote themselves, showcase their experience and connect with the right opportunities in the international tennis industry.
Recently, we ran a poll in our SPC New Job Alerts WhatsApp group asking members:
“Which of these roles best represents you as a coach?”
The idea behind the poll was simple. We wanted to better understand the different types of coaches within the SPC network, while also giving members the chance to highlight their main coaching area and explain why clubs, academies, players and families should consider working with them.
The results showed just how varied the SPC coaching community is:
| Coaching Role | Votes |
|---|---|
| Travel Coach for ITF juniors / ATP / WTA players | 37 |
| Private Coach for family | 16 |
| Club Tennis Coach | 17 |
| High Performance Academy Coach | 26 |
| Club / Academy Director | 15 |
| Fitness / Padel / Pickleball Coach | 8 |
| High Performance Coach for federation | 12 |
The biggest response came from coaches who identify as Travel Coaches for ITF juniors, ATP and WTA players, with 37 votes. High Performance Academy Coach was also strongly represented, receiving 26 votes.
This tells us that many SPC members are not only interested in traditional club-based coaching roles, but are also looking at international travel, tournament support, player development and high performance environments.
Following the results of the poll, our first coach showcase focuses on the Travel Coach category.
Travel coaching is a highly specialised area of tennis. It requires much more than strong on-court knowledge. Coaches working with ITF juniors, ATP and WTA players need to understand tournament planning, match preparation, match analysis, communication with players and parents, emotional support, and how to create a professional environment while travelling.
This week, we are showcasing five SPC coaches who bring experience, professionalism and international knowledge to this area of the game.
Gabriel Hurtado

Gabriel Hurtado brings extensive experience from the ITF Junior Tour, both as a former player and as a coach working with ambitious junior athletes.
As a former ITF Junior World No. 180, Junior Davis Cup representative and international competitor, Gabriel understands the demands of the junior pathway from personal experience. He has also travelled extensively as a coach, supporting junior players through the challenges of international competition.
Gabriel has helped several athletes in Colombia develop into Top 150 ITF Junior players, using a coaching approach built around detailed match analysis, tournament planning and individualised periodisation. His focus is on helping players peak at the right moments during the season, while also supporting their long-term development.
For Gabriel, strong relationships are central to good coaching. He prides himself on trust, professionalism and a genuine commitment to helping each athlete maximise their long-term potential.

Markus Holthaus

Based in Germany, Markus has a university degree in Sport and Biology as a teacher, alongside the highest level of coaching qualifications from the German Tennis Federation and the national Olympic Federation. He also played First Division tennis in Germany, giving him a strong understanding of the game from both a player and coach perspective.
Markus has travelled around the world, speaks three languages and is comfortable finding solutions in different environments and cultures. His experience includes working with international players and helping people progress both on and off the court.
What stands out in Markus’ approach is his belief that coaching is not only about tennis. He sees his role as a mentor, helping players develop as athletes and as people.

Javier Gonzalez

Javier Gonzalez believes players and parents should consider him as an ITF Junior or Pro Tour Travel Coach because of the experience, professionalism, discipline and high performance understanding he brings to the role.
With more than 12 years of coaching experience and a competitive playing background, Javier has worked with competitive juniors, ITF players and U.S. college players. His experience allows him to support players technically, mentally and professionally, both on and off the court.
Javier’s strongest qualities include communication, adaptability, calmness under pressure and a clear commitment to player development. He understands that tournament environments can be demanding, and he aims to create a positive, professional and focused setting that helps players perform at their best.
For Javier, the role of a travel coach is about more than winning matches. His goal is to help players grow as athletes and individuals throughout their journey.

Sebastian Cala

For Sebastian Cala, coaching became part of life at a very early stage. What began as a way to support his own journey as a player developed into a career and a lifelong passion.
Sebastian’s coaching philosophy is rooted in experience. Having spent many years involved in competitive tennis, he believes one of the most valuable things he can offer his players is the knowledge gained from pushing through the challenges, pressure and struggles that come with the sport.
He places a strong emphasis on attitude, commitment and hard work, while also respecting the individuality of each player. For Sebastian, player development is not about trying to copy somebody else’s pathway. It is about helping each player reach their own full potential.
His message is clear: work ethic is not negotiable, but every player should be developed in a way that respects who they are.
