I\’m Aly, from Hong Kong and sport is where I excel. A very early memory I clearly picture in my mind is when I was 6 years old discussing with the new boy who just beat me in the sprint race, what made him run so fast? I decided it was because of his pigeon footed style and much to my mum\’s dismay, I trained myself to walk/run pigeon footed…and then back again for my mum\’s sake! I don\’t think it made much difference as I was never able to beat that boy, but I can honestly say this was my first foray into sports performance enhancement.
Now, as a Certified Tennis Performance Specialist, I integrate corrective exercise, strength and conditioning for performance enhancement, tennis-specific movement, and serve biomechanics to develop injury-resistant athletes. My approach focuses on customized, long-term development plans that prioritize both performance and injury prevention. For me, coaching is about more than physical conditioning; it’s about building a resilient mindset, embracing the process, and helping athletes reach their long-term goals while enjoying the journey

Born and raised in Hong Kong to a Gibraltarian mother and a father of Scottish descent; fortified by the British education system, and seasoned on Spanish soil, my journey in sport has been shaped by diverse influences across continents and cultures. From playing regional-level tennis and earning an international rugby cap against Japan to facing the challenges of injury in my own athletic career, I’ve gained a deep understanding of what it takes to perform at elite levels and, just as importantly, how to rise after setbacks which ultimately shapes my approach to coaching and performance.
Now based in Denia, Spain, I bring over 20 years of international experience to my work as a Strength & Conditioning Coach. For the last two and a half years, I’ve had the privilege of working at the Ferrer Tennis Academy in La Nucia, where I collaborated closely with the Director of Performance and Head Coach, to help develop the academy’s high-performance tennis programme. During this time, I established the current physical development programme, designing everything from warm-up/cool-down protocols to weekly training programmes that focus on the core aspects of a complete tennis athlete. This effort, combined with an emphasis on a variety of recovery protocols, directly contributed to a 75% increase in full-time players at the academy over a period of 18 months.
Prior to my work at the Ferrer Academy, I was fortunate enough to work alongside an established and highly experienced tennis S&C coach for ATP/WTA players. This experience deepened my expertise and understanding of what it takes to develop top-tier tennis athletes at the highest level.
As a Certified Tennis Performance Specialist, my approach combines corrective and sports performance enhancement strategies, tennis-specific movement techniques, and serve biomechanics to build well-rounded, injury-resistant athletes. Every player has unique needs, which is why I design customized, long-term development plans that focus not only on performance but also on reducing injury risks. Whether it’s perfecting technique, optimizing nutrition, or integrating recovery protocols, I work to ensure my athletes have everything they need to succeed—on the court and beyond.
For me, coaching is about more than just pushing players physically—it’s about fostering a mindset that values hard work, understanding the process, and staying resilient in the face of challenges. My mission is to guide athletes towards their long-term performance goals, teaching them to love the journey just as much as the victories.
Experience
At 50 years old, I’ve lived many experiences which all contribute to the way I am now, both professionally and personally. The role I play as a strength and conditioning coach specialising in high performance tennis very much combines both the professional and the personal. The bottom line though is people employ my services because they require guidance to successfully navigate the brutal demands of professional tennis, and that’s what I do.

It's been a busy year our end with A. exams, health and sh'e finally on track.2023/4 didn't go as expected but she's in a good place now. She played brilliantly yesterday and her level is going up all the time. We are going to explore finding an S&C nearer to home because as you suggested it's not ideal that she is here and you are in Spain. If that ever changes then let us know because you've been the best S&C coach she's ever had. Thank you for everything you've done for her.

Alastair has been very methodical in his planning both long and short term for each player, whose differing needs and goals required an eye for detail to assess and analyse player movement (on and off-court) which has resulted in improved performance and reduced risk of injury. It is clear this has been due to his effective communication and education of players on proper exercise technique, hydration/nutrition, injury prevention and other important recovery protocols. He is a great team player with a bubbly character and sharp sense of humour. He will be sadly missed here at the academy but I understand his wish to pursue his professional career in elite tennis and further afield within the profession
